Mountain weather keeps its own counsel, and every Asheville local eventually learns the town's second repertoire: the rainy day activities that turn a washed-out forecast into a good story.

The city is almost suspiciously well-built for it.

Start with the museums, which punch far above the town's weight class.

There is serious art downtown, hands-on science for the kids, and a pinball hall where the price of admission buys unlimited play on machines older than your parents' marriage.

Then the bookstores β€” and one deserves the capital letters locals give it.

The downtown landmark bookshop has anchored rainy afternoons for decades, and its cafe corner has absorbed more dissertations, breakups and novel outlines than any room in western North Carolina.

Used-book rooms and comic shops fill out a full browsing circuit, all within an umbrella's walk.

The Grove Arcade adds a roof to the wandering itself: a nineteen-twenties architectural confection full of shops and eateries where strolling counts as the activity.

Breweries, of course, do not close for weather.

A rainy Tuesday taproom carries a particular contentment β€” the big windows working like aquarium glass, the stouts suddenly making seasonal sense.

The chocolate lounges and dessert rooms downtown run the same play with sipping chocolate instead of porter.

For the fancier version of hiding indoors, the town's spas β€” including the famous subterranean salt-and-soak houses β€” turn a grim sky into an alibi.

And never underestimate the long lunch.

This is a restaurant town; a two-hour midday meal with a window seat is not killing time, it is the local liturgy for days like this.

The secret rainy-day truth: some of the best mountain views happen an hour after the rain quits, when the clouds drag themselves out of the valleys in pieces.

Keep one eye on the sky and the car keys close.

Rain here is not the cancellation of the plan.

It is just the town handing you a different one.
