Asheville is a dog-friendly city, plain and simple.

You will see more leashes than strollers on most mornings.

The mountains help, since trails sit a short drive from almost anywhere in the city.

Many breweries keep water bowls by the door and treats behind the bar.

Patios downtown and along Haywood Road in West Asheville tend to welcome a well-behaved dog.

The North Carolina Arboretum has leashed trails with long views and easy grades.

Just check their leash rules before you go, since they do enforce them.

For a quick leg stretch, the greenways along the French Broad are flat and friendly.

The riverfront took a hard hit from Hurricane Helene in 2024, and parts are still finding their feet.

Go gently down there, follow the posted signs, and give recovery crews room to work.

Off-leash dog parks are scattered across the area if your dog needs to run.

Bring your own water in summer, because mountain sun is sneakier than it looks.

Winter trails can ice over, so paws and people both want decent traction.

Plenty of shops keep a treat jar at the register and a dog bed in the corner.

Mast General Store is used to four-legged visitors wandering the aisles.

If you are new in the city, ask a local where their dog likes to go.

You will get an honest answer and probably a story.

Pick up after your dog, every time, no exceptions.

That one habit keeps these places open to dogs for the next person.

Keep your dog leashed wherever leashes are asked for.

Hot pavement burns pads, so test it with your hand before a midday walk.

Most of all, let your dog set the pace on the trail.

This is their city too.
