A downtown-to-Highland plan you can mostly walk, one pour at a time.

Asheville has more breweries per person than just about any city its size.

That is not bragging, it is just math, and it means you can plan a day of taproom-hopping without ever getting in a car.

Start downtown, where a dozen taprooms sit within a few blocks of each other.

Wicked Weed pulls a crowd for a reason, and their sour program is worth the detour.

From there you can wander to a handful of smaller rooms that pour everything from crisp lagers to hazy IPAs.

If you want the view, head east to Highland Brewing, the one that more or less started all of this back in 1994.

Their taproom has a rooftop and a big lawn, and on a clear evening the mountains do the work for you.

The South Slope is the dense part, a former warehouse district now packed with beer.

You can walk the whole thing in an afternoon and still not hit every door.

Pace yourself, because the pours add up faster than you think.

Order a flight when you cannot decide, which will be often.

Most rooms are dog-friendly and kid-friendly before a certain hour, so bring the family if you like.

Food trucks park outside most spots, so you are never far from a taco or a pretzel.

The riverfront breweries took a hard hit from Helene, and some are still finding their feet, so call ahead before you point the car that way.

Tip your bartenders, and ask them where they drink on their night off.

That last question is how you find the good stuff no list will tell you about.
